Greek Lesbian Pride! Or Why I am Not a “Lesbian”

I saw this on Yahoo randomly today. Apparently Greece is pissed. “Lesbian” is no longer a politically correct term. And why? Well, who here remembers Sappho and her promotion of love between women? Apparently the people of Lesbos are offended because they just now realized they couldn’t refer to themselves as “Lesbians.”
OK, I am gay and I am snickering.
They say that the “other meaning” insults their identity. Those crazy Lesbians!
“Lambrou said the word lesbian has only been linked with gay women in the past few decades. “But we have been Lesbians for thousands of years,” said Lambrou, who publishes a small magazine on ancient Greek religion and technology that frequently criticizes the Christian Church.”
Well, there you have it. I am no longer a Lesbian (unless I spell it with a lowercase “L”?). Personally, if I was from the island of Lesbos, I would be proud to be a Lesbian. I’d be proud to be from an area with over 250,000 Lesbian men and women! But I guess we all can’t be gay, er, happy.
